Oftentimes, I hear a client say that his or her divorce is “simple” and he or she cannot imagine it taking long for the divorce process to be complete. Although, in some cases, both parties are very reasonable and are able to come to an agreement easily, this is rarely how the divorce process plays out.
How quickly things can be resolved between a divorcing couple depends on a number of factors. Perhaps one of the most important factors is the personalities of both parties. If one party is unreasonable, it is unlikely that an agreement will be reached, or that it will be reached quickly.
The number of contested issues in your case can affect both the cost and length of the divorce proceeding. Sometimes people are surprised by how their spouse reacts during the divorce process or by what their spouse actually wants from the divorce. This could be a certain asset he/she wants, spousal maintenance, or specific custody/parenting time arrangements. These issues can be unpredictable and can cause a case to become more complicated and take longer to be resolved. Although you may think that you and your spouse agree on everything, this may change once you are actually making final decisions.
For these reasons, and many more, it is very hard to predict exactly how long your divorce will take and how much it will cost. Both the cost and the length of a divorce proceeding vary from case to case. Keep in mind, even if you think your case may be simple that may change once the divorce process actually begins.
