The most notable characteristic of a parenting consultant is that the relationship is created by a contract between the parties. This contract typically selects a professional, outlines his/her authority, and includes a specific term. Although many individuals do not put much thought into the term length, this is an area that should be given much consideration.

The most common term length we see today is a length of two (2) years. This term length is typically the safest choice for most parties, especially those who are not sure if they are fully “sold” on the parenting consultant process. An important thing to keep in mind is that this may be too short of a term for your family’s goals and you may be left with no neutral professional at the end of the two (2) year term.
It is also possible to create an indefinite term for the parenting consultant. This can give your family, and the parenting consultant more flexibility to accomplish your goals. This may be a better option for families with ongoing conflict, younger children, and serious co-parenting concerns.
While no one can predict the future, or predict whether things will change in their family, it is important to put some thought into the appointment term for a parenting consultant. At the very least, this will ensure that you have made a thoughtful and reasoned decision.
